De Breek Visitor Centre stands on the edge of Etersheimerbraak, a polder dating from 1632. After the flood of 1916, clay from the polder was used to raise the Zuiderzee Dyke, creating the second-deepest polder in the Netherlands. The neighbouring Brekermolen, its tower cut down in 1930, was restored to its former glory by Molenstichting Zeevang in 2002.

  • The Dik Trom Path (yellow) is named after Dik Trom, the creation of the Etersheim schoolmaster and children’s author C. Joh. Kieviet. The short walk passes typical ‘Dik Trom highlights’: the one-room schoolhouse, now the Children’s Book Museum; the mill; and the sweet shop. ‘It’s a special route, that’s for sure!’ No dogs allowed.

  • The Etersheimerbraak Circuit (blue) passes a wet nature area managed by Staatsbosbeheer, popular with black-tailed godwits, curlews, lapwings and mute swans. No dogs allowed. This route is closed during the breeding season (15 March–15 June).

  • The Ferry Route (purple) is also special: walkers have to pull themselves across on two hand ferries. The route further follows a farm track between the ribbon developments of Etersheim and Warder. No dogs allowed. This route is closed during the breeding season (15 March–15 June).

The Zuiderzee Path (LAW 8, grey) links the routes from this starting point with Schardam, from junction 13, and Edam, from junction 16.
