Diemerbos is a relatively young park, planted in the 1990s in the open Gemeenschapspolder. During construction, various tree trunks from 3,000 year-old bog oaks were found in the soil. These were probably from an offshoot of the Reigersbos, a marsh forest near the former Bijlmermeer lake. It is a living park on top of a dead forest, although Diemerbos also suffers from tree mortality occasionally. For example, many sick ash trees had to be cleared in 2017.

The western part is an urban park, with benches, picnic areas, a sunbathing field and a play forest. The eastern part is a bit more rugged and wet: marsh forest, grass and reed beds, with marsh marigolds and southern marsh orchids.

  • The Rondje Diemerbos or Diemerbos Walk (red) is suitable for making an initial acquaintance with the urban park. Along the way, you will pass picnic areas, a play forest for children, water features and a large sunbathing field.
  • The Veeneikroute (yellow) is an extension of this walk via beautiful forest paths. The route is named after the prehistoric oaks that once formed a forest here but were killed about three thousand years ago due to high water levels and peat formation. The fossilised oaks can still be found in the soil.
  • The Overdiemenroute (blue) runs first through the park but then veers eastward out of the park. You walk along the banks of the Diem, the river that Diemen is named after. The dikes you walk over date back to the Middle Ages and there are many rare and beautiful plant species growing in the outer dike basin areas. Do not be surprised if you see a grass snake sunbathing or swimming, because this harmless snake is common here.
  • The varied Bijlmerweideroute (green) heads west out of the park - over the Veeneikbrug bridge to the Bijlmerweide park, along the edge of the Bijlmer district. You return via the campus village of Diemen, the new Holland Park residential area, the Diem river and the Penbos marshland. You will walk through parks and residential areas, over medieval dikes and through nature reserves, before returning to the Diemerbos.
  • The Natteneuzenroute or Wet Nose Route (purple) is a dog walking route and is separate from the walking network.

Please note that the whole western part of the Diemerbos, with the exception of the play forest, is a dog walking area.
