For centuries, the people of Alkmaar have spent their leisure time in the city parks De Hout, Westerhout and Oosterhout, which were once farmland and pasture. Around 1600, so-called houten were created outside the city walls: rows of trees alongside a road. In the eighteenth century, when Alkmaar residents wanted a shady place to walk, these avenues acquired a park-like form with winding paths. This is how today’s city parks came into being.

  • The Westerhout Walk (red) is a short walk through Westerhout Park and past Molen van Piet.

  • The Wooded Alkmaar Route (yellow) follows the ramparts south-east of the historic centre and passes through Westerhout and Oosterhout parks. A beautiful green city route.

  • The Alkmaar Circuit (orange) partly follows the ramparts towards Alkmaar Station. The ramparts, built in 1573, have gradually become a park with splendid mature trees.

  • The Overdie Walk (black) is a longer circular walk through Westerhout, Oosterhout and Boekelermeer. The grass path on the bank of Boekeler Ringsloot is for pedestrians only, and dogs are not permitted.

• The Old Towpath Route (green) lets you discover the old towpaths beside the Hoevervaart. Dogs are not permitted. No dogs allowed.
