The dunes between Camperduin and Petten have often been swept away by storm surges. That’s why they constructed the Hondsbossche Zeewering. Men from throughout the region were called in to raise a sand dike behind the remaining narrow row of dunes. That dike was the forerunner of the seawall. The current 5.5-kilometre dike dates back to 1870. In 2014, measures were once again taken to ensure coastal safety and as part of the 'Kust op Kracht' project, the coast between Camperduin and Petten was reinforced with sand.

  • The Hondsbossche Route (yellow) runs along part of the Hondsbossche Zeewering. Behind this seawall, clay was extracted for the Oude Schoorlse Sea Dike. The De Putten nature reserve, north of this route, is a reminder of this. The Hondsbossche Dunes were constructed to reinforce the seawall.
  • The United Polder Route (green) takes you through the Harger en Pettemerpolder, which dates back to the Middle Ages. You’ll also see De Putten where clay was excavated for the seawall. It is a true bird paradise. Dogs are prohibited.
  • The Top of the Dunes Tour (red) leads you over the highest dune tops of the Kop van Noord-Holland region. You walk through the Schoorlse Dunes; a unique Natura 2000 area where several species of birds nest and fantastic mushrooms grow.
