Den Burg
The centre of Den Burg is well above sea level and has always been a safe place for the islanders to settle. The village's history dates back to the 7th century. As evidenced by the names Binnenburg and Burgwal, a castle once stood in the circular centre of the village and was surrounded by a rampart and a moat. The traditional crafts of yesteryear are reflected in the street names. Warmoesstraat was full of fruit trees and vegetable gardens, while Texel residents processed sheep's wool in weaving mills on Weverstraat.
Den Burg is a nice starting point for exploring the surrounding countryside on foot. The farmland to the east of the village and the Hoge Berg to the south both have their own charm.
- The De Hal Farmer’s Circular Walk (green) was created by ANLV De Lieuw Texel along with local farmers. After the new Texelwende housing development, you walk straight through meadows, among Texel sheep and through fruit orchards with apple and pear trees. Dogs are not permitted on this route.
- The Burg en Berg Route (purple) leads from Den Burg to iconic 'De Hoge Berg' landscape. You will explore old local paths between the garden walls. These charming, unpaved paths wind through the rolling farm landscape towards the village of Oudeschild. Enjoy the view of the sheep surrounded by Texel's natural beauty. Along the way, you pass the Georgian War Cemetery, a silent reminder of the April 1945 uprising.
