Texel's northernmost village is also the youngest on the island. Prior to the construction of the Zanddijk (Sand Dike) in 1630, the sea had free rein as far as the island of Eierland. After the reclamation of the intervening salt marsh area, the village of De Cocksdorp was founded in 1836 and named after the Antwerp financier De Cock. About 100 years ago, the village lay amid farmland, with a small harbour for the mail boat to Vlieland. The surrounding landscape has changed significantly over recent decades. Farmland became bulb fields, recreational areas were created and nature was allowed to flourish in part of the polder. Applicable for both routes that start from this point: the Wadden Sea Dike is not accessible during lambing season and dogs are not allowed. Follow the alternative route over the Stengweg.
- The Dorpzicht Walk (yellow) was created at the initiative of the local village committee and is a beautiful route for villagers, tourists and birdwatchers. The nature reserve along the old Roggesloot tidal creek consists of sparse grasslands rich in flowers. Walkers are treated to the sight of orchids and many meadow and water birds here.
- The Robbengat Route (black) is a long circular walk from the village that links the Krimbos nature reserve, the Eierlandse Dunes, the beach and the dike. The lighthouse and Wadden ferry De Vriendschap are also located on the route. This walk shows off the highly varied landscape of the northernmost part of Texel.
