Haringhuizen is an old and attractive linear village with a medieval church dedicated to St. Willibrord, set on a high mound. Although recent municipal reorganisations have placed the village within the municipality of Hollands Kroon, in daily life the nearby market town of Schagen remains its main centre. Until 1811, Haringhuizen also formed part of the manor of Schagen, along with Barsingerhorn and Kolhorn. It once served as an outer harbour for Schagen: boats travelled along the Hoogsloot – originally a tidal creek – to Kolhorn and from there to the Zuiderzee.
- The green Haringhuizer Route runs along Muggenburgerweg and the Bonkelaarsdijk in the Slikvenpolder, where the medieval land division is still visible in the landscape, then continues along Meerslootpad to Schagen station and returns to Haringhuizen. The route is waymarked with green arrows.
