Since the beginning of this century, Amsterdam Science Park has been developed to provide the University of Amsterdam with the kind of space that is difficult to come by in the city centre. The site is mainly home to faculties of exact sciences such as physics, biology, mathematics, chemistry and earth sciences. The complex also houses several research institutes and the Amsterdam University College. It is located in the Watergraafsmeer, a polder that was created in 1629 by draining the Diemermeer lake. In 1921, the polder was added to Amsterdam and a large, new district was created.

  • The Watergraafsmeerroute (green) passes several well-known places in the district such as the Oosterbegraafplaats cemetery, the Middenweg and the Frankendael Park. The area has many characteristic 1930s houses and remains a lively, popular residential area. It is a lovely walk on the dike along the ring canal, which still borders the polder. The route also goes through the small but popular Flevopark on the edge of the Indische Buurt district.
  • The Route Nummer 14 or Number 14 Route (purple) is named after the jersey number of the famous footballer Johan Cruijff. The route travels through Betondorp, where he learnt to play football on the street in the 1950s. Unfortunately, the old Ajax stadium De Meer on the Middenweg no longer exists. It has made way for a new residential area. The bridges are named after the players of the successful Ajax team from 50 years ago.
