Haarlem is blessed with greenery and water extending into the heart of the city centre, which is a treat for walkers. The Bolwerkplantsoen on the former ramparts is especially worth a detour. It is also pleasant to walk along the Spaarne and the Brouwersvaart. Haarlem traditionally owes its fame to the textile industry, the printing press and the tulip trade. The city also has a strong brewing tradition. In the 15th century, there were at least 120 breweries there, thanks to the clean dune water.

  • The Teylers Walk (yellow) is a proper city walk. Through charming courtyards and alleys, the route leads to the Spaarne. You walk past the Teylers Museum, a national heritage site inside and outside. Via the Grote Markt, the Prinsenhof and the Jopenkerk, the walk finally leads through the Bolwerkplantsoen back to Haarlem station.
  • The Droste Walk (purple) in Haarlem is a special walk. It takes you along the Drosteboulevard past the old cocoa factory on the Spaarne. Other highlights include De Koepel, Windmill De Adriaan, the Gravestenenbrug footbridge and, of course, the Grote Kerk or Saint Bavo church.
  • The Vaart en Duin Walk (green) goes through Haarlem and its surroundings. You can stroll out of the city via the Bolwerken and the Brouwersvaart. In Bloemendaal, you pass a series of beautiful villas around the meadow on the Lage Duin en Daalseweg. Back in Haarlem, the Schoterveense Molen windmill and the old Ripperda Kazerne cavalry barracks are also along the route.
