The opening of the Alkmaar–Den Helder railway line in 1865 revived the somewhat sleepy market town. Transport to and from the weekly and annual markets became much easier. Between the 1880s and 1910, steam tram lines were added, serving the wider area, including routes to Wognum, Alkmaar and Van Ewijcksluis.

Three walks explore the surroundings of Schagen, where traces of former tramways can still be seen.

  • The red Neskaag Route runs through the marine clay polder of Neskaag, along old country lanes and across farmland past the Keinsmerwiel.

  • The purple Barsingerhorn Route runs through the open polder along a grass dyke and a former tramway to the restored tram station of Barsingerhorn.

  • The green Haringhuizer Route runs through the open south-eastern side of the town to the attractive linear village of Haringhuizen, with its 15th-century church, along Muggenburgerweg and through the Slikvenpolder.
