The mound village of Sint Maarten was once known as ‘Hemelrijkshorn’, located on the Zijperwad at the horn or projection of land where the Westfriese Zeedijk and the Valkkogerdijk meet. Until the first reclamation of the Zijpe in the 1550s, Sint Maarten lay on the sea. The village suffered repeated dyke breaches during storm surges, and the two breach pools (‘wheels’) near the campsite still bear witness to this. In 1799, the village lay on the front line between the Anglo-Russian invasion forces and the patriot–French defenders and was largely destroyed.

  • The blue and red circular walks run past the Modderwiel and Dijkstalwiel near the Westfriese Omringdijk and follow former secondary dykes: the Wijzendweg and Herenweg. The red circular walk is not accessible during the breeding season (15 March–15 June).

  • The orange route runs to a breach pool near the cemetery and campsite and returns along a farm track and a grass revetment of the dyke.

  • The sea-green and yellow circular walks run along the edges of the village, through green strips, past sports fields, across the skating rink and along the Westfriese Omringdijk.

  • The purple circular walk around the Burghorn polder returns along the Schagerwiel.
