Zwanenburg almost forms a double village with Halfweg. Since 2019, both villages have been united in the much larger municipality of Haarlemmermeer. Before that, the Ringvaart of the same name was the municipal border with Haarlemmerliede. The Gemeenlandshuis (former municipal house of the water board) in Halfweg also lent its name to the village: Huis Swanenburg. Two stone swans at the gate remind us of this. Zwanenburg’s oldest houses are located at the bottom of the dike. Farm workers built their accommodation here after the reclamation in 1852. The major growth occurred 100 years ago, simultaneously with the arrival of Schiphol airport. Two new bicycle and walking bridges over the Ringvaart connect the village with Spaarnwoude and with the Tuinen van West area in Amsterdam.

  • The Park Walk (red) is a short walk through the newer recreation area in Zwanenburg. The designers have created a kind of English landscape garden for the 35 ha park. A thousand trees have been planted in the park to compensate for the construction of the High Speed Line (HSL). You can walk on winding paths to the edge of the polder and a long creek a little further along.
  • The Zwanenburg route (blue) leads you through Zwanenburg and Halfweg. Along the way you will see the old sugar factory, the Zwanenburg walking park with petting zoo, and the new park on the outskirts of the village. On the Amsterdam side of the ring canal you look out over the Osdorper Bovenpolder from the dike. In Halfweg, the eponymous steam pumping station with museum is the highlight.
